The Keys claim the best weather in the United
States, and for the most part we would have to concur.
Sea islands in general have a micro-climate where the
ocean tempers the heat or cold depending on the season,
and Key West is no exception. In winter the tropical
winds keep the island warm with the aide of the warm
seas. The local temperatures have never been recorded
below 41æ F! Coupled with the rain gauges which are
kept quite dry during the winter months, the Key West
weather beats out that of 99% of the nation. Winter
water temperatures may require a wet suit for diving
and snorkeling, but it is an ideal time for boating,
fishing and sunbathing.
Many may assume summers at Key West are unbearable.
To the contrary, it is the ocean again that moderates
the temperatures, highs and lows normally vary by
no more that ten degrees in a day. In over 100 years,
the temperature has not risen over 96æ F in summer,
even places as far north as New York hit the century
mark at least once during the season. Water temperatures
are in the refreshing range most of the summer, which
is ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving and other water
sports. Summer thunderstorms drop their rain and
pass on, leaving most of the day sunny and comfortable.
Hurricanes do occur on occasion, mostly in late summer
or early fall, but this is not a yearly occurrence,
on average happening less than once in a decade.
So for the most part the weather is best in Key West!
